The Southeastern District championship sailed at the Savannah Yacht Club this past weekend was a huge success. While the number of boats was down from recent years, the 11-boat fleet was very competitive and the conditions led to very tight racing. When it was all over our new champion was a familiar face – Lenny Krawcheck. He and his crew, Bo Samuelson and Logan Bonner, sailed a very consistent series, something no other boats were able to do.
The breeze on Saturday was out of the west ranging from 6 to 18 with plenty of shifts. The west wind made for perfect windward/leewards up and down the Wilmington River, the race committee took full advantage of conditions to get in four very nice races.
Sunday was a different story with a lighter breeze out of the north so the races were sailed largely in the Skidaway River. We managed to get in two races in very challenging conditions as the breeze went through numerous up and down cycles between 2 and 8 knots.
Once again the Savannah Yacht Club was a fantastic host for a Lightning regatta, something they have perfected over the years, and everyone had a great time. Lenny is our new district champion once again with last year’s champion, Marcus Moehlman runnerup. Full results have already been posted on the district website.
